'First day on the job as a full Detective and I wind up in a shoot out.' Nathan Gavin thought to himself as he sat crouched behind his new partners car. "Man, why does this shit always happen to me?" Nate mumbled as another shot rang out. "Hey, Lt. Rafe, any idea where the shots are coming from, sir?" Brian Rafe looked over to the new detective.

"Not a clue yet. Hey, Capt., Marshall get a bead on where the shots are coming from yet? We're getting hammered over here." Rafe called over his radio.

"Looks like their in the second floor of the old meat prossessing plant." Capt. Henry Brown replied.

"Great what window?"

"Looks like the middle and the third from your left."

"Thanks H."

"Welcome Rafe. Just remember we want these guys to stand trail not dead."

"Yeah right Capt. Assuming we can get clear shots with the L.D.T.'s."

"Lt. whats a L.D.T.?"

"Long Distance Tazer. Here catch."

"Oh. Thanks. Now how do we get a clear shot with these?"

"We go in. LDT's have a two thousand feet max. range but work best at five hundred."

"And how do we get inside? We're being nail to the ground here."

"Thats where the Capt. comes in. Capt. you ready with the smoke?"

"Yep, ready. Here it comes guys heads up." six smoke canisters land between the cars and the building, creating a ninty foot wide smoke cloud. "Lets go Gavin." The two officers head through the clound and into the building. "You go left, I'll go right. Remember 500 to 2000 feet. Got it kid?"

"Yes sir." Gavin heads off toward the left hand stairs that lead up to the second story office section of the old building. Just seconds before his head would clear the top of the stairwell a large black cat leaps out of nowhere sending Gavin down the steps a little as the cat passes him he turns his head to watch it but it disappears as suddenly as it appeared. Gavin stands there on the steps a few seconds staring at where the cat should have been. His head snaps up as he hears a growl of a large cat at the top of the stairs and behind him.

'What the hell?' Gavin carefully moves up the stairs but as he does the growls get louder and more angery sounding. He turns to face the direction of the growls and moves up one more step. As his head clears the floor of the second story he spots a man holding a machine gun aimed at his head and the huge cat growling at the man, who doesn't seem to notice it. Gavin ducks just as the machine guns owner squeezes the trigger. Gavin brings his gun up as the machine gun man's face clears the top of the rail or the stair, and fires. The tazer's electical blast knocks the guy down.

Gavin moves up the stairs as he hears a loud crackaling coming from his right. 'Hmmm. Lt. Rafe got one too. Now where the hell did that cat go?' Gavin turns his head to the left in time to see a long black tail dissappear around a corner. Carefully he follows as he nears the first door he hears the cat growling again from the last door in the hall. Gavin pauses for a second before following his instincts and ignoring the other two doors. Ducking down he peeks into the room just in time to see the cat swipe at a man holding an uzi aimed high, the cats large paw passes through the mans arm. Gavin aims high rolls and fires nailling the uzi man in the chest. As Gavin comes up from the roll he moves into the room only to find the cat pawing at a closet door. Just as Gavin is about the move to the closet he hears the sound of someone coming down the hall. Gavin moves to hide behind the door jam. He continues to listen as the footsteps come closer, just as the footsteps clear the second door a large wolf comes through the door and right past Gavin. Gavin watches as the wolf goes to sit next to the cat. Bothanimal look at him then the doorway. Gavin turns back to the doorway only to find Rafe standing there. "Shit! Don't do that Lt. Um... Lt. Am I seeing things or is there a huge cat and a wolf sitting next to that closet over there?"

Gavin motions to the closet afraid to turn around again.

"Yes there is a wolf and black jaguar sitting next to the closet. And I think they want us to open the closet. Think we'd better don't you? I mean you don't want to piss off a jagaur and a wolf do you?" "Yes sir... I mean no sir.... I mean.... I don't know what I mean."

Gavin watches as Rafe walks over to the closet and opens the door to find a little girl lieing in the floor asleep. "That's the Gregors girl isn't it sir?"

"Yeah kid it is. Capt. I think we're going to need an ambulance for the Gregors girl. Looks like she's been drugged." Rafe looks back at Gavin who is watching the jaguar and wolf. Rafe looks over at the two animals, the jaguar is laying down seemingly unattentive of anything going on around him as he looks up at the wolf who is sitting looking around and appears to be just barely sitting still. Rafe looks back to Gavin to meet his eyes. "Wait til we get back to H.Q. to talk about it okay kid?"

"Talk about what sir?" Gavin asks but flashes a very brief smile.

"Nothing kid."

AN HOUR LATER MAJOR CRIMES HEADQUARTERS.

Sitting around a large table in the confrence room are Brown, Rafe, Marshall, Adams, Simon Banks, Joel Taggart, Megan Conner, Mitchels, and Daryl Banks.

"So is anyone going to tell me what the hell those two are?"

"Well, do you really want to know kid? Cause once we tell you there is no going back." Brown says.

"I...." Gavin looks at the two animal who have just reappeared on the table. "Yeah I want to know."

"Okay kid. Relax this is a long story. It all started back in 2000. Back then Simon was the captain of major crimes and Joel was acting as Lt. even though we all knew who belonged in that role. Rafe and I were just detectives then. There was another team other then those here. James Ellison and Blair Sandburg. Now Sandburg didn't start out as a cop at first he was just an observer...." Brown told the story of how Sandburg and Ellison became partners, the other added to the story a little from time to time.".... Two years after Sandburg became a full detective and Jim's offical partner they were outed as being lovers by an A.D.A. who had it in for them both for something or other. Anyway they took a lot of heat from the rest of the cops in Cascade. One day Jim, Blair, Rafe, and I were on the trail of some major drug dealers that had been piping huge amounts of coke into the city. Somehow the dealers found out about us hunting them. They set a trap for us. When we fell into the trap Hairb.... Blair called for backup. It came to late. Jim and Blair were both killed saving Rafe and me. Since Jim was a Sentinel and Blair was his Guide they had spirit animals. Jims was..."

"The jaguar, and Blair's was the wolf right?"

"Yeah kid. How'd you know?"

"Well my grandmother and grandfather practiced Shamanism and my grandfather once told me stories about the sentinels and guides. He said that all Sentinels and Guides had spirit guides that perfectly matched their own souls. He also told me that some legends about sentinels and guides said that if they died before their times they became their spirit guides so they could continue to help the tribe. I guess it's true."

"Sure looks that way. What do you think Blair?" Gavin looked at where the wolf and jaguar had been instead of two animals there were two men.

"Sounds right to me, captain." Blair answered Simon.

"Sounds right to me too, sir." Jim said. Then Jim turned and kissed Blair as they both faded away.

Everyone sitting at the table grinned as the two lovers faded. Knowing that love as strong as their two friends was just as strong if not stronger after death as it had been in life.
