Summary: Kawalsky figures out why O'Neil never married Samantha Carter in the SGA quantum reality.

Warnings: Some spoilers if you haven't seen the episode "Point of View." A slashy rewrite of the scene in the other reality, where the guys are installing the Asgardian power amplifier to the stargate switchbox.

Notes: My first SG fic - a short, lite and fluffy pastry. I usually play with Jim and Blair, but I just got Showtime, and seeing 3 eps a week (2 on Showtime, 1 in syndication on Fox.) can be somewhat addictive. Oh man, the Jackson munchies are coming on - gotta run - need another 10cc (or should that be inches???) of Daniel in my system.

Electrical Engineering classes are a few years behind me, so actual power line setups probably vary from my version here.

Jack O'Neil removed the power amplifier from Kawalsky's back pack, and hoisted it into position next to the generator feeds for the stargate. He shut off the main power switch for the generator, isolated it from the lines, and started connecting the power lines from the Asgardian amplifier to the supply lines from the generator.

Major Kawalsky glanced down the corridor for any signs of the serpent guards currently infesting the SGA facility, this quantum reality's version of the SGC.

"You and Sam didn't ever hook up," Kawalsky said. "I don't know. I just figured since you two were working together... well."

O'Neil tightened the clamp of the first amplifier line to the generator supply line. "Regulations come to mind."

"The rank thing," Kawalsky said. "Right. She's a Major in your reality."

The Lieutneant double-checked the ammo clip of his semi-automatic, and cast an eye toward the empty corridor - no activity yet. "The Carters are something, aren't they, figuring out this alien tech stuff so quick. She's smart. The Sam from my reality. The Jack O'Neil I knew really loved her."

O'Neil could see where this blatant hint was headed, and continued with the task at hand. He fastened the second clamp as tight as possible onto the supply line. He grabbed the amplifier output lines and eyed the switchbox's high voltage wiring, looking for the correct place to attach them.

"Things work out differently sometimes," he said.

Kawalsky nodded and gestured with his finger. "The alternate reality thing."

O'Neil closed his eyes and concentrated. Kawalsky's unwanted matchmaking wasn't helping O'Neil's memory. The instructions Carter gave were to... connect it to the outgoing supply line.

He reached for the line, and felt the hair on the back of his hand tingle. He stopped with his fingers an inch from it. The line above the switch, which he almost touched, was still live - he had almost electocuted himself. He cursed himself for listening to Kawalsky instead of concentrating on the task at hand.

He took a deep breath, thought for a moment, and the answer came to him - parallel. He needed to connect the amplifier in parallel on the disconnected supply lines from the generator, so that the outputs were positioned a few inches above the inputs. He positioned the first output and started tightening it to the supply line.

"You know that she figured out the Stargate all by herself," Kawlasky said. "The dialing and all the translations too. You know, if you think about it, in some odd way, it's kind of like your Sam got split into two different people. Follow me?"

O'Neil positioned the second amplifier output.

"Granted," Kawalsky said, "your Sam just does the science thing."

"Carter is a valued member of my team," O'Neil said.

"And the translations," Kawalsky said. "Sniffles the geekboy-"

O'Neil glared at him.

Kawalsky corrected himself. "Dr. Jackson does that. Yeah... two people. Too bad you didn't hook up with Sam."

O'Neil could almost hear the little wheels turning in Kawalsky's head. It's the little things that always get you caught. He imagined Kawalsky scrutinizing all the little oddities in his and Daniel's actions for the past couple of days, putting two and two together to reach the obvious conclusion which everyone else at the SGC had already figured out. O'Neil had grown tired of it, and of hearing basically the same thing said over and over - 'So the two of you are an item?'

"Glasses," Kawalsky said.

O'Neil glanced at Kawalsky. Glasses? What glasses? You're supposed to be confronting me about Daniel. He returned to his work.

"Jackson's glasses," Kawalsky said, wearing a knowing, crooked grin. "Nice of you to let him stash an extra pair in your quarters."

O'Neil fumbled the adjustable wrench, clanking it against several exposed pieces of metal. Ouch, nice rear attack with that one, Kawalsky.

"You're right, Colonel," Kawalsky said. "Things work out differently sometimes."

"Kawalsky," he said. "During any of your training, did they ever mention anything about being quiet."

The Major swallowed his grin and turned his attention to the corridor.

O'Neil finished the connections, and switched on the amplifier. It emitted an unnatural greenish glow, and hummed contentedly. He reconnected the generator lines to the main supply lines for the stargate, reset the generator breaker, and switched on the generator.

The two men readied their weapons, and headed down the quiet as a morgue corridor, heading for the SGA control room. Teal'C and Carter could probably use the extra firepower by now anyway.
