Tao lifted the head of the man who had been his ally and friend, and wept. The wounds on his body were too numerous and deep to treat now. Zad's knights, who had never posed a threat before, had finally accomplished the unthinkable.
They had killed the Beastmaster.
Unshed tears fell from Dar's eyes as he took his final breathes.
"No Dar. Please, don't go yet." Tao begged. He hugged the man close to him and tried to hold back his tears. "Please don't leave me."
Dar took small wispy breathes and looked into the dark depths of Tao's eyes. "Run Tao. Get. Out. Of. Here." Each word was a struggle, but Dar had never been one to give up without a fight.
"No Dar! I won't leave you!" Tao looked up to see hoards of Zad's Knights heading their way. He had tried to conceal Dar in the forest but they would eventually be found if they didn't move fast.
"Tao. Please. Zad. Kill. You." Dar began to cough violently and his whole tattered body shook. "I don't care. Dar, you have to hold on. Maybe if I can find some herbs..." Tao began, but he was stopped when Dar put his hand over his own darker one.
"Tao..." Dar began to cry. "Don't. It's over." "No..." Tao whimpered. Dar just nodded his head. "Yes. Tao...I...I..."
"What is it Dar? What are you trying to say?" Tao smoothed the Beastmaster's hair away from his eyes and stared deep into their brown depths.
"I'll never leave you." Dar stated in one breathe. "I...I love you Tao."
Tao felt tears fall from his eyes again. The realization of those few words hit him hard.
"I'm so sorry Dar. I'm so sorry..." He began to sob and dropped his head to the Beastmaster's chest. "I didn't mean to get caught again. I was only trying to get the arc. It was my fault that Calista got it and I was just trying to get it back for you."
Tao felt the presence of Dar's hand on his head, stroking his hair. Even at a time like this, on the verge of death, Dar still found time to care for him and comfort him. Just the touch of his hand could make all of Tao's pain disappear.
"Wasn't your fault Tao." Dar's voice had become only a whisper. Tao lifted his head and looked the man he loved square in the eyes.
"It was. Every things my fault Dar. The arc getting stolen, Zad's knights attacking you. All because of me! I didn't mean to Dar. I didn't mean to." His body began to tremble against Dar's. "I...I only wanted you to love me!"
The look on Dar's face was one of total compassion.
"Do. Love. You. Tao. Always. Have." With those words Dar took his final breath. His eyes rolled to the back of his head and his chest fell one last time.
"Dar..." Tao's voice came out in only a small squeak. He leaned forward and hugged the love his life. "I love you too Dar. I love you too."
He reached out a shaky hand and caressed Dar's pale face. He ran his hand through that blonde hair one last time and ended by gently closing Dar's eyes. He removed the sacred sword from its place on Dar's back and stared at the shiny blade.
When Zad's knights got to the forest clearing they found two bodies, and no survivors.
