Notes: Here's my first attempt at a Dar/Voden fic. I haven't seen that many episodes, so they might be really OOC. (Of course, there may not be a way to get them together and keep them IC. ^-^)

This takes place several months after Voden was defeated by Zad. And since mating season seems to be the ongoing theme, that's the time of year it is when they run into each other again.

"Unexpected"
by faechylde

An extremely irritable Dar angrily worked his way through the forest. He could count on Tao for just about anything, why not this? He had held out as long as he could, while experiencing the passion his animal companions were enjoying. Not to mention all the other creatures around that were also in season. Oh, but his body burned to find a mate of its own, and the only person he wanted had rejected him.

He had told his friend about it ahead of time, little good that it did. The Eiron apparently thought he was safe, being male. He had paled considerably when Dar had finally given in to his hormones and started to circle him, a predatory gleam of lust in his eyes.

"Uh, Dar? Dar, what are you doing? Stop it, you're scaring me!" Tao had said, trying to back away as Dar approached him. With his lightning quick reflexes, the golden haired man pulled Tao into a tight embrace and kissed him fiercely, forcing his tongue into his friend's mouth. Tao made sounds of protest, and as soon as Dar loosened his grip he found himself smacked across the face. That hurt! He snarled at the Eiron, who cringed, certain that this mad beast who his friend had become would tear him limb from limb, but Dar did no such thing. He still knew what 'no' meant. He swiftly turned and disappeared into the trees. Tao had heaved a sigh of relief.

And Dar knew that if he stayed with Tao, sooner or later he would force his friend, and he feared the damage to their friendship he may have already caused, without making things even worse. He didn't really like the idea of wandering the forest for weeks waiting for his unsated desire to abade, either, but he didn't seem to have a choice. Coming across a small waterfall, he doused himself under the cold water for a few minutes. It was only a temporary solution- not ten minutes later his body burned again.

After about a week of this frustrating wandering, he came across a set of tracks. They looked familiar, but he wasn't sure. He carefully followed the footprints, silently stalking his prey. They led him to a small clearing. *My, how the mighty have fallen.* Dar thought to himself. But he was impressed that the spoiled brat of a prince had actually managed to take care of himself out here in the wilderness for so long. He found a good vantage point to watch his prey and plan his route of attack. He knew the Nord was a formidable opponent, and he would have to be cautious. Voden was no longer wearing his long white coat- it was likely too impractical for moving through thick brush. His light blond hair had grown out, nearly reaching his shoulders, so that he had to pull it back to keep it out of his face. His thin, white shirt allowed his watcher to see how well muscled the younger man actually was. Even without his makeup, Voden still had very attractive natural coloring, and Dar wondered why the young Nord had even bothered to cover it up before.

Voden had been bent over, tryng to start a campfire, but now he stood, sensing eyes on his back. He scanned the trees, trying to discover the intruder. Dar silently hopped down behind him, quickly snatching the other's dagger from the back of his pants and flinging it away into the bushes. The young blond whirled around to face him. "Beastmaster!" he exclaimed, startled. Dar said nothing, merely scrutinizing him with an intense, inhuman gaze. He grasped Voden under the chin and studied his face. Then he ran his hand down and along the smaller man's chest and torso, starting to walk a slow circle around him, taking in every inch of the body of his prospective mate. Stunned, the prince stood motionless as he did so. But then he burst out laughing. He may be mad, but not stupid. He knew what this was. "You are more beast than man, after all!" he announced. Dar growled softly at that, only proving Voden's point. He was behind the younger man now, and he leaned in close to nuzzle his pale neck.

"un," Voden said softly. He closed his eyes and leaned back against the other man's broad chest. It was very tempting to just let Dar have him. He had always found men more attractive than women, and Dar was a handsome man indeed, no matter their former....disagreements. No, no, he couldn't let this happen. He didn't want to belong to anyone else, and deep inside he knew he would easily become attached to the beast man. He jabbed Dar in the gut with his elbow and took off running. He didn't make it very far. The Sula easily caught up with him and knocked him to the ground. However, Voden wasn't ready to give up yet. He managed to squirm away and kicked at his opponent, to no use. Dar was on him again in a second, maddening lust giving him more than his already great strength. Still, they wrestled around the small open space for several minutes before the young Nord finally gave out and went passive and quiet under Dar. "I give up, you can have me," he gasped out, his pale face flushed with exertion and arousal. His struggles had only made the beastmaster hotter, and the look of maddened animal lust in his eyes was scaring the smaller blond, though he kept his calm mask firmly in place. Dar looked at him with suspicion, not trusting him at all, and held Voden's wrists tightly as he lowered his head to capture soft, passion-reddened lips.

For several more minutes the only sounds were Dar's grunts and Voden's soft moans as the older man plundered the blond prince's mouth as they lay together in the sweet grass. Dar broke off the kiss and planted kisses along his new mate's jawline, to his ear, and down his neck. Voden lay with his eyes closed, lost in the intensity of the sensations assaulting him. He couldn't believe how badly he wanted this. He didn't move, even when Dar released his wrists and shoved his thin shirt over his head. He gasped and grasped the other man's shoulders as Dar lightly bit one of his nipples. Dar growled again and pushed Voden's arms back down above his head. The prince didn't need to be told twice. He did his best not to move as Dar continued his sweet torment, his breath coming in loud gasps.

Dar eventually resumed his downward descent, pausing only to remove the rest of the pale blond's clothing. He immediately returned to run his tongue along Voden's sex, licking his way up and down the shaft and dipping down to take each sac into his mouth. The younger man nearly came just from that, arching his back and making soft cries of pleasure. He made a whimper of disappointment as Dar pulled away. Wondering what his lover was doing, he opened his eyes to see the beastmaster sucking on his fingers. Oh. The anticipation made him even more excited. He couldn't believe this was happening, that he was about to be taken by what had been one of his most dangerous enemies, and he *wanted* it. He yelped slightly as a long finger suddenly entered him, and he forced himself to relax. Soon another finger joined it, and brushed across something inside him that made him cry out in ecstasy. Dar took that as a signal his mate was ready, and pulled him into his lap, thrusting into him almost immediately. Voden screamed from the initial pain, but as Dar kept hitting that spot inside him, the pleasure overrode pain. He leaned his head back against one sun-bronzed shoulder, mouth open, gasping for air. He could hear Dar making animal-like grunts and growls with each thrust, and he held on to the arm wrapped around his waist for dear life. Then Dar forced him to lean forward a little and started to nip at the nape of his neck. This was too much for Voden. He orgasmed violently, spilling his seed all over the ground. Dar came right after, gripping the smaller man so tightly he thought his ribs would break.

Voden leaned back against Dar, spent, his body covered with sweat. The beastmaster cupped his cheek and leaned down for another kiss, this time slow and deep. "Beastmaster..." Voden started.

"My name's Dar, and I'm not done with you yet , young king of the Nords." Dar interrupted.

Voden laughed bitterly at that. "Not anymore, I'm not."

Dar made love to him for several more exhausting hours before he was finally satisfied. "Mine," he whispered hoarsely to the half-dozing man in his arms. "Yes. Yours." Was the murmured reply.

Dar wondered how he would explain to Tao that someone who used to be one of their worst enemies was now his mate. No rush- it would take several days to go back to where he left his friend- long enough to think of what to say, and to see if Voden really meant what he said in the heat of passion. Dar smiled at the thought of the mad prince being in love with him- though he did seem a little more sane now. Maybe being thrust out into the real world had done him some good.

There was a cave nearby that Voden seemed to have made his home. Placing his mate and his clothes on what appeared to be his sleeping mat, he left to find his own place to sleep, still not trusting the Nord.

But he would be back in the morning. Dar was never one for casual mating and the younger man belonged to him now. *****

Voden woke in the morning bruised and sore- but more content than he had ever been in his life. Gingerly he picked himself up out of bed and reached for his clothes. He frowned, as they were covered in dirt and grass stains. He headed out to the stream to wash himself and his clothes. There was no sign of Dar, much to his disappointment. *That's it, then,* he thought to himself, *back to being alone again.* Unhappily he slipped into the chill water and cleansed himself, using herbs that he had found useful for the purpose.

He did the same for his clothes, hanging them on a tree when he was finished. Then he lay on the bank, sunning himself, trying to rid himself of the cold of the stream. He didn't know how long it was until he heard footsteps approaching. He opened his eyes to see Dar heading toward him. With a cry of delight, he jumped up as quickly as his tired body would allow and flung himself into the other man's arms, kissing him fervently. Dar pulled them back down to the ground, devouring his mouth in a long, deep kiss. "You came back," Voden whispered hoarsely when Dar finally released him. "Of course I did," was the reply, "You're mine."

The young blond nodded in agreement. It was odd to be possessed by the one he had so sought so hard to possess himself. He didn't mind too much, but still, it grated on his pride.

Dar handed him the pouch he was carrying. "Here, have some breakfast."

"Thank you," Voden replied, accepting the assortment of fruits and nuts.

"Oh, and here's your dagger back, too. Just don't make me regret it, okay?"

"Nothing is farther from my thoughts." Which was true, but Dar still looked at him skeptically as Voden retrieved his weapon.

Dar stood and checked the young Nord's clothes. They seemed to be dry, so he took them down and handed them over. "Here, get dressed."

"I take it you want me to go back with you?"

"Is that a problem?"

"Well, besides the fact that your friend probably hates me with a passion, and King Zad still wants my head, no problem at all," Voden replied, cocking his head slightly.

Dar looked at him. So some of the old attitude was still there. But the Nord did have a point. "You'll be safe at the sanctuary for now. Besides, do you really want to spend your entire life hiding out here in the forest?"

"No, but if I am found, I will not have a life at all."

Dar glared at him. He wanted Voden with him, risk or no risk. "Come on," he said, grabbing one pale wrist. The young blond followed him without resistance, but not without complaint." "Ow! By the--Dar, slow down! You took me quite roughly last night, remember?"

Dar gave him an apologetic look. "Sorry," he said, and slowed his pace to where Voden could easily keep up.

He let go of his mate's wrist, as he saw Voden was going to follow him, but the Nord insisted on hanging on to his arm. Dar was surprised- he hadn't expected the other to be so affectionate the morning after.

"Can I ask you something?" Voden asked after they had been walking for a while.

"Sure, what?"

"Why me? And how did you find me, for that matter?"

Dar struggled to find a tactful way to tell him the truth. He finally decided there wasn't. "I didn't have a mate, so I went into the forest to avoid hurting anyone in my madness. I ran across your tracks by accident."

"I see. So by the time you found me, you would've taken anyone, then."

Dar sighed. The boy wasn't far from the truth. "Anyone I found attractive enough, yes."

"Oh."

He looked over at Voden to see his reaction, but his trademark mask of indifference was well in place. That wasn't a good sign. Who knew how he felt inside. To reassure him, the taller man gently stroked his soft, pale hair. Not receiving a response from that, either, he draped an arm across his mate's shoulders.

They walked in silence for several minutes before Voden spoke up again. "This happens to you every year?"

"Yes."

"And you don't choose a mate beforehand?"

*He just has to choose the most awkward questions.* "My first mate is dead. The only other I chose since then rejected me."

"I see." Voden seemed to consider that for a moment, then suddenly tried to take off running. He seemed to have forgotten that Dar was much faster than him even when he wasn't sore from lovemaking.

"Hey, hold it!" Dar yelled, easily catching Voden around the waist and trying to restrain the struggling prince. "What's the matter with you?"

"Let me go, you got what you wanted from me. Why do you want to keep someone you hate with you?" There was a hint of hysteria at the edge of the young Nord's voice.

"Shh, calm down, I don't hate you."

Voden fought him a little longer, but soon realized it was futile and leaned back against Dar. "After everything I've done to you? How can you possibly forgive me for that?"

Dar sat down, pulling the pale blond into his lap. "People can change, Voden. Besides, you agreed that you belong to me now, and as long as you keep your word, I don't have any problem with you."

Voden sank his face into Dar's shoulder. "But you don't love me."

"Not yet, but I do like you a lot better now."

"But you're in love with someone else," he argued.

Dar didn't have a good answer for that. So he simply held his lover close and gently massaged his back, eliciting a soft moan from him. He wondered if Voden's earlier pursuit of him had not been only for his powers after all. The young man's attachment to him seemed deeper than one night of lovemaking would warrant. Still...

"Have you ever been with anyone before?" Dar asked.

Voden shook his head no, not lifting his face from the Sula's shoulder. Ok, that explained it. No wonder the Nord was so responsive to his touch. He buried his fingers in the long, silky strands of Voden's hair, and pulled his head back so he could lean in for another kiss. The younger blond's arms slid up to encircle his beloved's neck as his lips parted to accept the invasion of Dar's hot, moist tongue. Dar made a deep, rumbling sound in his throat, and the gentle rubbing of his mate's back turned rougher, as he clutched the slender body close.

"Ah..Dar, I don't think I can.." Voden gasped out as the kiss ended.

"I know, it's too soon," Dar reassured him. Truth be told, his body wasn't ready to have sex again, either. So instead he lazily made his way down the soft, sensitive skin at the front of Voden's pale throat with hot, wet kisses, thoroughly enjoying the soft gasps of pleasure his lover was making. After a while, he stopped, and pulled them both to their feet. "Come on, I'd like to make some distance today," he said gruffly, his voice still husky from the intensity of their necking session.

Voden swayed slightly as he stood, cheeks still flushed. Dar wrapped an arm around his waist to steady him, and once again led him toward the direction of the sanctuary. Thankfully, the former king asked no more questions that he really didn't want the answers to, and the rest of the day passed without incident.

***************

Several days later, back at the sanctuary...

Tao had started to get worried. He didn't know how long Dar had to stay out in the forest before his, er, urges passed and now he really wished he had asked more questions when his friend had tried to explain about mating season. Not to mention he was really bored sitting around all by himself.

So he was extremely relieved and happy to see the Sula strolling out of the forest toward him that afternoon. He ran up and gave Dar a big hug. "So does this mean you're not mad at me?" Dar asked with a bemused smirk on his face.

"Oh, no, it's fine. I understand completely." Actually, he was still a little freaked out, but Dar seemed to be back to normal, and Tao didn't want any awkwardness to linger in their relationship. Dar grinned and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before letting go of him.

That was when the Eiron noticed a certain someone he had never expected to see again standing behind his friend, and watching the whole exchange between the two of them. "Uh, Dar, you didn't..."

"Yes, I did. Voden, you remember Tao?"

He nodded. "Yes. The Eiron." His face could have been made of alabaster, it was so devoid of expression. Alarms went off in Dars head, as he was quickly learning to read his mate's moods. He was certain Voden was jealous, and he had learned that a jealous Voden was a very bad thing.

Tao, for his part was speechless. He opened and closed his mouth several times, but nothing came out. "Well, um, uh...so is he staying here with us?" he finally stammered out.

"Of course," Dar replied, "He's mine."

*'Mine'?! What does he think Voden is, a clay pot or some other kind of object?* "Excuse me, I think I need to go sit down somewhere," Tao said and quickly made his escape.

Once Tao was gone, Dar turned to his mate. "Relax. He's not interested in me that way."

"It doesn't bother me," Voden announced and walked into the sanctuary.

"Liar." The Sula followed behind him and scooped his lover into his arms and carried him off to the sleeping area...
