It started with just a whisper at the back of his mind, "Weredoggie wants you". Dar shifted and moaned in his sleep. "Weredoggie is thinking of you" Dar twitched andturned causing his bed partner to place a gentle hand on his shoulder. Tao hoped that the touch would calm Dar so they could both sleep. "Come to me, BeastMaster. Weredoggie needs you" This 'thought' jolted Dar upright. "Where are you?" he asked.~~~
But there was no answer. Silence reigned in the Sanctuary. Tao lay in a deep sleep, his body curled in a Dar-shaped spiral, next to where the Beastmaster had lain but a moment before. It had been a long hot day's tramp through the Mydlands. Ruh had peeled off at midday, grumpily informing Dar that there was a stream for bathing 3 leagues west of their route, and that he would catch up with the Sula warrior and his mate eventually.
The two travellers had made their camp in near silence. Dar had been profoundly grateful for the small stream that offered a supply of fresh water. He sensed, rather than saw, a cascade further downstream; he told Tao about it, and both agreed that it would make an excellent pre-breakfast destination in the morning. They had enjoyed a desultory supper of freshly gathered nuts and berries with squash roasted quickly with green herbs by Tao over the fire. The Beastmaster again contemplated how wonderfully Tao's presence had changed his life. Sleepy kisses and cuddling had soon given way to slumber ... only to be awakened by this strange inner voice, that gave way to half formed cravings and desires.
*What is a weredoggie? I've never heard of an animal called that,* Dar wondered, rubbing his head thoughtfully. His mind went back to half remembered legends and tales his Father had told him so many moons ago in childhood days.
*Dar!*
There it was again! The Beastmaster leapt noiselessly to his feet, his hackles raised, all his senses keenly pitched. He sensed now where that voice was coming from. The cascade ... it was closer than he had thought. A gibbous moon, bloated, vaguely obscene, sailed in silver splendour above the trees, and in his mind's eye he saw a lean body silhouetted in the honeylight, the head thrown back, a keen gutteral cry raised to the skies ...
"Arrrroooooo ... !"
THAT was no hallucination; Dar heard THAT cry with his own ears, not his inner senses. He looked down protectively at Tao, who stirred a little in his sleep but did not awaken.
Dar knew he could not rest until he got to the bottom of this new mystery. He looked down at Tao again. *Sharak!* he called with his mind, and the magickal eagle's mind met his. *Keep an eye on Tao for me. I won't be gone long.*
With a sharp cry the eagle rose from his perch nearby and ascended in a long, looping circle over the camp. The moonlight gave near perfect vision, and Dar studied the landscape through Sharak's eyes. He caught a glimpse of crashing foam glittering in the darkness and moonlight. And wasn't that a shaggy, dancing form standing on the shore? Dar grabbed his spear and ran.
